Sunday Column 16-07-2023

I started writing Sunday column only two weeks back. I did get positive response from many of my readers. But now I have realised that writing a weekly column is not easy. There are lot of things happening around you all the time and one always have opinions about those. But do you want to voice all those opinions? Are your own views correct, at least unbiased? Do you have enough first-hand knowledge about things? And more importantly, do people at large really want to hear your views? There are no easy answers to these questions. But still, let me go on and see how things develop.

A conversation between Indian husband and wife:
Wife: I watched the launch of this Chandrayan 3 today. It seems government spent Rs. 750 Cr or so on this mission. It is still less than about Rs.1000 Cr, supposed to have been spent in making the film Adipurush, which I do not intend to watch anyway. Out of this Chandrayan rocket, most of it burnt within the first 1000 seconds. Only the Orbiter and lander are now left. What a waste! And this orbiter will reach the moon. The Lander will land on the moon. Both are then lost for ever, meaning, they will not come back ever.
Husband manages to get a word in: So??
Wife: You know what, it reminds me of us. You see, we spent lot of money to raise our children. We spent still more money to educate them and still more money to send them to USA. And like the Chandrayan they will never come back.

Jokes apart, it is a great leap for India and ISRO. Let us hope Chandrayan 3 fulfils the mission.

I have been watching lot of sports on TV lately. No, I am not talking about cricket!! Indians are now excelling in other games like Atheletics, hockey, football, Badminton, Chess, squash etc,. etc. But Indians are only interested in this game of CRICKET! We have lot of talent and money is not a problem now a days. Only we need to get banish these politicians from the field of sport. But easier said than done.

We seriously need to revisit the anti-defection law. Loop holes are deliberately kept to enable defections! Again, easier said than done!

Indian law is still stuck in british era. Need an overhaul. Again, who will bail the cat? Convicted criminals like Lalu Prasad come out on parole and indulge in political activities. Again, who cares?

Case filed by a common man takes ages to come for a hearing. Politicians file case at the drop of a hat and lo and behold! They get a fast hearing. Celebrity lawyers are minting money.

Family courts try divorce cases. You do not need a lawyer to file for divorce. You yourself can write a petition. But this fact is carefully hidden from general public. Lawyers charge up to one lakh to file for divorce and again mint money. Also, lawyers see to it that there is no quick settlement. The reason again, is money.

A lot needs to be done to stich our torn social fabric. Is anyone listening??!!??

The antidefection law is flawed. In parliament members are supposed to add diversity to a debate. Currently the law requires members to to thr party line. The opposition opposes and the treasury bench opposes the opposition. I can understand the need for a whip- tobe used only in a no trust motion. Elsemembers shld speak their minds. There is also need to revisit the emoluments and privileges for mps and MLAs. And improve their accountability. For this we have to demand accountability. We also dont care

Chandrayaan was just the occasion, the comment was more on the social structure as seen in India. I have seen bankrupt parents struggling in India financially as well as due to lack of mental and physical support in their sunset years while their children make hay abroad. They won't even bother to come home hen parents need them. They even ask their friends and neighbours to look after their parents. A sorry state of affairs indeed !
